Notes on travel to Bhutan 3 (meals and drinks)
We will explain in detail the things you should be aware of during your trip to Bhutan (meals, drinks, etc.).
About meal
The staple food is the same rice as in Japan. There are a lot of stewed meat and vegetables using chili and cheese, and the basic style is to eat rice with it. There are many rich and spicy dishes using a lot of chili peppers, but unlike India and Nepal, they do not use many spices, but use yam, salt, cheese, butter and so on.
Some restaurants serve Chinese and Indian dishes.
When dining, be sure to choose a cooked dish. Unpeeled fruits such as bananas and tangerines are safe, but be careful with salads, cut fruits, and desserts that use raw vegetables.
The food sold on the street has problems such as storage, dust and flies, so it is not recommended even if it is heated. If you eat, please eat immediately after cooking.
Some people break their stomachs with spicy dishes. If you feel unwell, choose a dish that does not use chili.
About mineral water
Mineral water is readily available anywhere in town. What is sold in the town can be purchased for 1 liter, 15-25 Nu, 1 liter at the hotel, 30-50 Nu.
In Bhutan, hygiene is not very good, so do not drink tap water or fresh water. Be careful as water in restaurants is often tap water. Also, when ordering juice, be sure to have the ice removed.
When purchasing mineral water, make sure that the lid is tight.
About alcohol
Domestic beer, whiskey, and local sake ara are distilled from rice and barley wheat and are popular with tourists.
